Torres de Serranos

The Torres de Serranos is the northern gate to what used to be the city walls of old Valencia. Unfortunately, the city walls were demolished in 1871 all in the name of progress. Now mostly a restoration of the original gate, Serranos is one of only two remaining gates from the original military walls (the other being the Torres de Quart at the west). Enormously rugged but with an attractively medieval chess-piece design, the Serranos can be spotted from atop the main Cathedral's Torre del Miguelete about a mile away.

As dusk was hovering over Valencia, some workers were dutifully hanging an enormous Valencian flag from the top of the Torres de Serranos, apparently in preparation for the great "Las Fallas" festival held annually in mid-March.
