The Tourist Authority of Thailand has its main office for the Northern Region on the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, about 200 meters south of Nawarat Bridge. Here you can pick up free maps and magazines, and ask specific questions about places to go and things to do while in North Thailand. The staff do not all speak fluent English, but they will greet you with a smile and do their best to answer your questions.
