We found a fallen tree with a petrified shell inside the root, wonderful wildflowers, great pebbles and rocks, and the best part was the silence of the breeze as it moved across the lake and onto the beach. Marshy areas are restricted as they back up to the salmon areas and are protected for wildlife. The beach is immaculate and is bordered by woodland areas which back up to the Tallac Historic Site (see other journals)...a wonderful day! Good weather or bad, you'll enjoy this deserted gem!

We made a reservation to tour the Pope Estate and it was well worth it. It was a fascinating glimpse into the past when the rich and famous retreated to the mountains to be entertained by their equally well-heeled hosts. I found the servants housing and facilities just as interesting as the fancy house. The restoration work that's being done on the estate is amazing -- many of the original design and decorative features have been re-created in exact detail.
I remember as a kid being bored to tears when my parents dragged me to the Breakers in Newport, RI but my 11-year-old son enjoyed the tour. He especially liked the vintage pool table, radio, and telephones. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There's a garden with a gazebo where the rich and famous had their afternoon tea. There were also exhibits of local artisans handiwork -- we bought a hand made Christmas tree ornament and the artist used a wood burner to personalize it for us for a very special souvenir. With all the hustle and bustle of downtown South Lake Tahoe, this was a great place to escape to for a relaxing and informative afternoon.
