Sunset Strip

So, this is pretty much simply an entry to "de-mystify" the glamour that is Sunset Strip. I took this picture while driving along the glitz of it all. I thought it ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous.

The Sunset Strip

Anything goes after dark on Sunset. Sunset Boulevard has been a haven for the music scene since the 1960s. Jim Morrison and the Doors, Van Halen, and Motley Crue played at The Rainbow. The Viper Room is owned by Johnny Depp. The Whiskey A Go Go hosted acts like Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin. The Roxy made its mark with bands like Guns and Roses and Poison.Sunset Boulevard has so much history to it, the entire block should be preserved for generations to come.

People-watching has always been great here. Stop into the Rainbow for a bite to eat (the lasagna is amazingly awesome), or rub elbows with rock stars from the past or future rockers at The Key Club.

All the clubs are open 7 days a week. Some charge a cover, some don't. Weeknights are the best time to go to a club, because the weekends are usually crowded with tourists. Some great music has been discovered on this street, and more great bands will be born here.

Most of the clubs on the block have websites - just Google them. You'll be able to look at event calendars and cover charges, not to mention the history. See my review on the Rainbow.

Sunset Boulevard is lined with bars and clubs; the decision is where to go. I went on a bar crawl organised by the hostel to get a bit of a taste of the Strip.

Our first destination was The Saddle Ranch - a cowboy theme bar complete with a bucking bronco ride for the stupidly drunk. (If you're a girl and want a go you certainly get your money's worth as the (male) staff turn the machine way down low. Strange ....) Its a pretty big place and had no sense of atmosphere.

I was looking forward to the Red Rock, allegedly a rock club. I didn't notice it being particularly red and, sadly, it played no rock music. The dance floor is upstairs and played mostly R n B. I have to reccommend the big comfy sofas though.

We went to Miyagis next, a bizarre combination of sushi, bar and club. The club has several floors for its different functions with lots of mirrors. Definately more a place to show off than have a good time. Miyagis does have lots of cocktails though which are always good.

Our last stop was Dublins. As an Irish theme pub it has everything you expect - the Old Country decor, the drinks and the very, very drunk people. And at the end of the night that's exactly what we needed.

Sunset Strip was a fun night but if you're expecting LA glamour, you will be disappointed.

Sunset Strip

The Sunset Boulevard is a street for as long as the sun shines, but after sunset, it takes on the persona of the infamous Sunset Strip.

On the Strip, as it is called locally, you find endless chic and very cool bars and night clubs. When the sun goes down, this area comes alive, especially after 10pm. Do not miss The Viper owned by Johnny Depp and frequented by countless stars. Also equally infamous is the House of Blues that offers an excellent Sunday Brunch twice every Sunday. It boasts of authentic architecture and interior design that is a feast for the eyes. Bribe, rob and steal... do anything to get through those doors!

The best Chinese restaurant in town is also here on the Strip, near the corner of 7000, Sunset Boulevard. Joss serves authentic Peking Duck, second to none. Dinner costs $50 upwards without liqour, and the dress coat is, unsurprisingly, absolutely formal.
