St Kilda Pier and Brighton Beach

St Kilda Pier and Brighton Beach

Even though it’s winter, the beach is still a nice place to visit. Take a tram to St Kilda and walk out to the Pier with a snack or drink in hand. Halfway along is the St Kilda Pier Pavillion, a café that would be nice for a short break. At the end of the Pier, you can look back and take in the pretty view of the city. Although temperatures are in the mid-tens, you can brave a dip in the water and do the usual beach activity of hunting for sea shells. St Kilda in Winter is a relaxing place to walk, talk and admire the view with friends and family. It is especially nice in the evenings where you can see the sky change colour and follow the setting sun. For those who really want to swim, the St Kilda Sea Baths with indoor pool and gym is a short walk from the pier.

Brighton Beach is a little further down from St Kilda on the map but not walking distance. Its claim to fame is the colourful and brightly-painted beach houses that line the foreshore, reminiscent of the beach houses in Brighton in the UK. The only people there when we arrived were a pair of photography students and models and a life-saving group. I must admit that we left after a few snapshots because of the foreboding sky and heavy drops of rain. But it looks like a place that would be very nice in summer.

VICTORIAN ARTS CENTRE

Across Princess Bridge, on the south bank of the Yarra River, is the Victorian Arts Centre. Within the walls of these buildings the main works of art, concerts, opera, ballet and theatres of Melbourne are housed. The Arts Centre is the heart of Melbourne's culture. The complex includes the National Gallery of Victoria, the Melbourne Concert Hall, the Performing Arts Museum and the Theatres building, where the theatres are six levels below St Kilda Road. The 377 foot (115m) spire which tops the Centre is a Melbourne landmark, especially when illuminated at night.
