In the south section of Atlanta is historic Grant Park (not named after Ulysses S. Grant - but for an officer of the Confederacy who donated the land to the city of Atlanta). In Grant Park is both the Zoo and Cyclorama situated next to each other. We walked down to the Cyclorama. Inside there were many displays relating to the Civil War and we saw a short movie describing events leading up to Civil War battles in early July, 1864. We then were led upstairs to theater style seating in front of the Cyclorama, a 42-foot-high cylindrical oil painting--358 feet in circumference (on about 16,000 sq. ft. of canvas)--which depicts in meticulous detail the events of the Battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864. It took 11 Eastern European artists, working in the United States in the studio of William Wehner, 22 months to complete.

We enjoyed the interesting narrative about the ensuing July 22 battle as sections were spotlighted and the platform on which we were seated revolved ever so slowly around it the full 360 degrees. This must have been the best available type of depiction of stories prior to movies of the 20th century.
