South Congress

Drive (or walk) down Congress heading south, right across the river you will start to notice shop after shop or small art boutiques, vintage stores, as well as some hot spots for antiques. On Saturdays, they have a small open air market where vendors have booths set up with some phenomenal jewelry and art. It is a great place to walk around, and do some shopping. If you get hungry or thirsty on your trek, there is a Farm to Market store where you can find some great local favorites. A few coffee shops with great patios to sit and people watch. And an Austin favorite Amy’s Ice Cream.

I also hear that first Thursdays are even better, SoCo(a local term from south congress) turns into a huge market where you can find TONS of great stuff.

Prepare to practice your stroll and polish your meander! Every first Thursday of the month since spring of 2001, local merchants along South Congress from the Congress Bridge over Town Lake to Oltorf have kept their doors open a little later than usual to allow Austinites to peruse their unusual collections of art, antiques, clothes, jewelry, and other collectibles. In addition, many places offer free keg beer and food for sale. Of course, music, music, everywhere in true Austin style. Sometimes, new events become immediate traditions.

Free.

South Congress avenue has a few blocks of local shopping: including antique shops, clothing stores, a costume shop, toy stores and thrift shops. They also have some trendy clothing shops in the area and a couple of art dealers. It is a fun place to go to do a variety of shopping. It also offers a nice view of the Texas Capital building (a pink granite replica of the nations capital, only seven feet taller...everything is bigger in Texas.)
