Description
This ancient rite, originating in the Chosun Dynasty (form late 1300s to 1910), honors the Chinese gods who were believed to control agriculture. As farming was of utmost importance at that time, this ceremony was also very important. The ritual ceremony is performed every April around an altar built by the founder of the Chosun Dynasty, King Taejo. Originally, following the ceremony, monarchs personally plowed the farmland of the king to set an example to all people of the importance of agriculture.
