Description
This is nothing more than an irregular lump of granite-gneiss rock. It is pinkish-grey, measures within 1.8 meters and sits on an austere knee-high rectangular pedestal of pink granite. Before the rock was transferred to Moscow in 1990, the boulder rested on the site of the dreaded GULag system of hard labor camps in the Solovets Islands. This rock serves as a cenotaph for the millions of GULag dead. A public garden around the rock now provides a rallying venue for pro-democracy and human rights demonstrations.
