Description
This rite honoring the great Chinese scholar Confucius, was first performed in 372 at a famous academic institution. Later, it became a larger national event when Korea was officially declared a Confucian state (late 1300s to 1910). The solemn ritual involves arranging tools and food, and the procession of higher officials such as priests. It is held in a hall housing the memorial tablets of Confucius. Call for exact dates of the rites, as the dates are determined by the lunar calendar. Rites usually occur around February and August. Admission is free.
