Small Beach with Cloudy Water, but it'll do

Small Beach with Cloudy Water, but it'll do

This beach is pretty average, but it does the job for your average beachgoer. The sand is pretty nice--it's imported from the Bahamas, so if you like the sand there, then you'll like this sand. The water is calm--there are virtually no waves (good for kayaking). The water is cloudy, and nothing at all like the crystal-clear blue water of the Caribbean; it's more sand-colored, and there's plenty of water grass growing in the ocean, as well as various floaters (sea leaves, sea plants). It's also fairly warm (it was in May) and pretty shallow; you can walk out at least thirty feet and still be only waist-high.

In the past, I never really recognized the nuances of a beach. Sand was sand. Water was water. That was it. Now, I appreciate sand that is fine enough so that it's soft, but not so fine that it's just dust in your hand. I like sand that is just granular enough so that it feels good in your hand, and if you spread a handful of sand (especially wet sand) over your palm, you'll see different colors, and different grains. I like clear, blue water that you can see through, right to the ground. To me, this beach was an average beach (South Beach is nicer), but you still get the beach experience, with the palm trees and shade and the ocean breeze.

Higgs & Smather's Beach

Beautiful white powder sand beaches—sun in the fun or relax. A wonderful place to unwind for the day—nice long walks along the beach and a good book.

Higgs & Smather's Beach

Higgs is the first beach you come across coming from Old Town (we were on our bikes). It's located between two jetties, so a lot of seaweed tends to collect on the beach. We were just looking for sun, so we laid out our towels and got some sun. Higgs wasn't very crowded. Later in the afternoon, we were annoyed by an old man in a van playing his guitar, so we headed down the coast.

Here we found the craziness of Smather's Beach. It was PACKED. There were people EVERYWHERE. Vendors all over the sidewalks, big RVs parked across the street playing music, pretty much what you'd expect at a popular beach on Spring Break. Two of my friends went kayaking here for a half-hour. They had fun and got to go pretty far out and have a nice view of the beach from the ocean.

Both beaches provided about 50 feet of cream-colored-ish sand from sidewalk to the nicely colored blue, seaweed-infested water. The water is very shallow (less than 3 feet) unless you get really far out. There are also patches of slimy goo and seaweed in random places as you get farther out. The water was perfectly cool for March, with the outside temps being in the low 80s.
