The tour I took was an all-day tour from Playa del Carmen and included meals and guide and pickup and drop-off at the hotel for $75. We were picked up and traveled south to the Sian Ka'an reserve, where we transferred to jeeps and took off down a rugged jungle path/drive. It is quite rough but adventuresome. You stop for wildlife viewing and eventually end at the water where you transfer to launch and take a tour of the bay and the islands. There is a stop in middle for snorkeling tour and then to a small village for an included lunch. After a walk through the village and once again to our jeep, we head out and back to our hotel drop. It is a long day starting a 6:30 and ending about 8 or 9pm depending on your hotel location. This is for a moderately active person who doesn't mind bumpy jeep rides through the jungle; bring the insect repellant!

The guide, an environmentalist, picks you up at your hotel around 8am and takes you and others in the company van, an hour away to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. They stop at their visitor center to explain what you will see. They compare the Caribbean to the mangrove swamp. They take you in small motor boats in the swamp (water is probably 10 feet deep in places, so not what I think of as a swamp) to see the vegetation and fauna, and a Mayan temple. They provide lunch, and you get to float down the river with your lifejackets on. At the end, we went swimming in an above-ground cenote. It was a full-day trip - we got back about 5pm. It is important to realize that you do not go into the jungle, but see it from a distance. Also, the jungle in the Yucatan is not what we think of as jungle, with screaming monkeys and birds and orchids all over the place. The Yucatan jungle is dense vegetation, but the classic jungle I mentioned above is furthur south.

Tour the Sian Ka‘an Biosphere Reserve. My tour began with a boat ride through the biosphere. We were dropped off in a channel that the Mayans used for commerce for a floating expedition: it took a little getting used to! We sat in our life jackets and strapped them on, so we would be able to float along with the current. There were fish in the channel, mangrove tangle along both sides. We saw birds, butterflies, etc. The freaky part was that you would almost expect a snake or crocodile to come out!

After this adventure, we got back in the van and went to the nearby Muyil ruins. They are not completely excavated, and nowhere near as big as the Tulum ruins, but beautiful just the same. After all of this, we went to a nearby cenote for snorkeling and swimming. The water was not as clear because of earlier rains the area had had, but there were many fish, and the water was refreshingly cool. An excellent adventure!
