Description
Although a bit remote, a visit to this temple is worth the effort. Irregular worn stone steps are the approach to a rustic gate known for its statues of two Nio temple guardians. A former palace guard who subsequently became a priest and poet named Saigo [1118-90] lived in a hut on the premises for a spell. Noh theater specialists will recall that in the play Saigo-zakura, Saigo laments that too many of his poems were on the subject of cherry blossoms. Believers visit the Binzuru image, whose responsibility is to thwart off disease.
