Shimo Daigo-ji Temple

Description

Located in the lower part of the Daigoji complex is Kyoto's oldest wooden building, a pagoda that dates to 951. It was constructed with backing by Emperor Suzaku and is dedicated to his predecessor, Emperor Daigo; it has been designated a national treasure.

Heian-period national treasures located inside the pagoda are the 'Eight Founders of Shingon Buddhism,' mandala paintings, and an image of Dainichi. There is a tiny shrine to honor Benten, and another Shinto shrine called Seiryu-gu, whose Hon-den was built in 1517.

Admission: JPY300
