Seol (lunar new year)

Description

Few traditional holidays are celebrated in Korea with such zest as Seol, the first day of the lunar new year. It is a day of family members coming together, dressing in customary hanbok and their best outfits. Tasty foods are prepared and plenty of alcohol is consumed, but it is a time of solemnity as well. Ancestral rites are observed through prayers and the burning of incense. Following the private ceremonies, younger members of the family bow deeply in respect to their elders and pledge obedience for the year ahead.
