Seiryo-ji (Shaka-do) Temple

Description

The story of this temple is that a priest named Chonen swore that he would found a temple to promote Buddhism. This he accomplished in 986 following a stay in China--having returned to Japan with a precious Buddha shaka in tow. He died in 1016 and posthumously the carving named Shaka-do, said to date to the Chinese Sung period, was moved into Seiryo-ji's main hall, built in 1776 on a spot where Chonen had lived. He chose this setting in the shadows of Atagoyama because he likened it with the holy Buddhist center, Wu Tai in China.
