This collection is located in the heart of Harlem and within a branch of the New York Public Library. Arthur Schomburg, born in Puerto Rico, was the original collector of this compendium of information about the black experience and African slavery. The original manuscripts, photographs, paintings and other documents that comprised the collection have been expanded since Schomburg's death in 1940, and now include over five million items. Admission is free.
