Description
This Church and Monastery complex dates back to 1488 and was built by the Franciscans. The beautiful portico is what makes the building really unique. The portico has nineteen arches which were decorated with frescoes in 1619. The interior is in a late Gothic style and has three naves. The belltower, which rises well above the building, was built by Battista della Casa in 1687. The building was completely violated when it became a barracks in 1879. It only regained its 15th century splendour after 1945. The adjacent monastery is still in military hands. On the wall of the lefthand nave there is a magnificent fresco by Biagio Pupini dating back to 1523.
