Salt Pond Beach

Salt Pond State Park is west of Poipu in Hanapepe. Follow the signs from the highway. Protected by a couple of rock shelves, this is a terrific place to swim, snorkel, and just a fabulous place to spend the day. It is popular with locals, so it can be crowded on the weekends. We usually hit this beach a couple times per trip during the weekdays if the surf is bad elsewhere on the island. There is fair to decent snorkeling by the rocks on the left-hand side. This is an official "park," so there's lots of paved parking, showers, bathrooms, fish-cleaning areas, picnic tables, grills, camping sites, and lifeguards. I particularly like the slope of the sandy beach around on the left side. You can really dig in and make yourself a little recliner chair in the sand, just perfect for keeping an eye on the horizon and an eye on your book.

Salt Pond Beach

We stopped here on the way back from Waimea Canyon to Princeville. We were looking for someplace that had a great sunset and we definitely found it. Great reefs to provide calmer water for snorkeling and even saw a monk seal on the beach (don't go to close, there are strict laws about not disturbing them). The sunset was amazing and the beach nice and clean.

South Coast Beaches: Poipu and Salt Pond

Poipu Beach is probably the most popular of all the Kauai beaches, by far. It''s a pretty beach, but was way too crowded for our taste -- we only went for one afternoon and I probably wouldn''t go back again. It''s a big family beach and while the water is clear and beautiful and the sand powdery and white, it was just too noisy. Still, one highlight was seeing a few cute seals sunning themselves on the sand in a specially roped-off area, just loving life!

Salt Pond Beach, on the other hand, a few miles west of Poipu (driving along the southern shore of the island), was more to our liking. A secluded, crescent-shaped beach with calm water and fringed with coconut trees was a perfect place to spend a quiet afternoon reading and playing scrabble. Plus, I got to take one of my top three favorite photos of the whole trip -- the lifeguard and surfboard shot below.
