Description
Andrei Sakharov was one of the great spokesmen for democracy in the late Soviet Union and early transition period. Part-museum, part 'think-tank', the idea behind the centre is to uphold and promote discussion on democratic values. There are both reminders about the past history of political repression, and exhibitions related to issues of human rights and freedoms in post-Communist Russia.
The museum has hosted exhibitions and discussions on subjects like Chechnia, the meaning behind the great walls of the world (the Berlin Wall, the Kremlin and the Great Wall of China), and the 1968 events in Czechoslovakia.
