Sacro Monte di Varallo

Description

The Sacro Monte di Varallo is forty four chapels which contain six hundred wood and terracotta statues, and is the model for all the Sacri Monti. The idea of creating a 'New Jerusalem' developed in 1480, and the complex was made between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. Giovanni and Antionio d'Enrico, Morazzone, Gianoli, Giacomo Ferro, and the Wespin brothers all worked on it, as well as a myriad of other artists. It has undergone some changes through restoration in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
