The Rocks Market

This market located at the Rocks is held every weekend (Sat-Sun), rain or shine. You will find all sorts of jewelery, arts and crafts, local pottery even doggie treats. I purchased my green necklace I have on during my visit to Watson's Bay, and of course some doggie treats as my little Cookie always benefits from any of my trips.

The Rocks Market

Looking for authentic Australian arts and crafts? The Rocks Market is held every Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 2pm. It takes places on two streets, George and Playfair rain or shine. A series of triangular tents (very much like the opera house sails) shield patrons and crafters from the elements. There are also several food vendors to feed your appetite and one or two musicians performing to keep you entertained. I found out about the Market from the Rocks website (www.therocks.com). A list of vendors along with information about them is given on the website so I was able to get some idea what I could buy before I even left for my trip. Every medium is represented from sketches, painting and photography to textiles, ceramics and wood carving, far too many to name here (one vendor had nothing but handmade wind chimes). Find everything from cheap and cheesy tourist gifts to expensive artist originals your can buy for your personal collection. I knew when I went to visit that I wanted some boomerangs to give as gifts and I found them at the Specializing in Boomerangs booth. I also found an Australian scrapbook and photo album by textile artist Lisa Reniore and hand painted wood picture frames. Also, all these vendors took American Express and all were willing to ship the items back to the states for me. What a huge relief because I had no idea how I would have gotten these things on the plane. All the pubs in The Rocks were open as well and many people were drinking their first pints of the day. What a country! The Market was a great way to spend a fall Sunday afternoon and I put lots of money into the Australian economy at The Rocks.

There are hundreds of tiny shops all along a few streets. I would suggest taking a cab to Circular Quay and then walking to The Rocks from there. There are all kinds of shops, from those with cheap tourist T-shirts all the way to fine jewelry and art stores. I bought several of my souvenirs from Australia in these shops.

The Rocks Market

Weekends in the Rocks are busy, with many people attending the outdoor market. In recognition of Sydney's tendency to periodic downpours, most stalls are covered with a removable canvas roofing system. It seems to work well enough at keeping the sun off, but fortunately we didn't test its waterproofing ability.

Some of the items for sale here were unique crafts that we have not seen in other markets. (My wife is a market stall addict.) One stall holder was selling very cleverly designed wooden puzzles and had the patience of a saint when a young child tried to force the equivalent in puzzles to the round peg in a square hole. (The saga ended happily. Dad bought the puzzle!)

My wife found some upside down hanging pots, which are kind of weird, but they certainly seemed to work judging from those on display. You have to wonder, though, why would you want to grow plants upside down?

Another stall sold homemade cakes and pies that were truly delicious. Hope their kitchen was up to the standard required for healthy eating! (We suffered no ill affects other than a little tightening of the waistline!)

The market was a great place to spend two or three hours and pick up some unusual craft items. For those wanting aboriginal souvenirs, there were a number of stalls with an aboriginal theme.

The markets open on Sat and go till Sunday night. It is a great experience to go down to The Rocks District and hunt for bargains, gifts and out of the ordinary things. Walk around and look at everything. Most places take credit cards so that is a plus when travelling.
