Description: Named a World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal has been connecting Ottawa to the city
of Kingston on Lake Ontario. The waterway consists of a series of lakes and rivers connected by canals, and is a popular spot for pleasure boaters, who cruise up and down its 125 mile length. Visitors to the Canal can rent boats of their own, or enjoy any number of aquatic activities like kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Driving along the canal is another scenic experience all together, with the winding roads taking travelers through the heart of Old Ontario. Plenty of inns and bed and breakfasts abound along the canal, so you’ll have a nice place to rest after making a day (or two, or three) of the trip. If you’re canal-bound in August, check out the Rideau Canal Festival, when the waters fill with celebratory flotillas, and art exhibits and bike tours line its shores.
