Sweaty Times In Red Rock Canyon

Sweaty Times In Red Rock Canyon

Recently our family visited Red Rock Canyon. I highly recommend going to this tremendous natural wonder! The price is fairly cheap so that is just another reason to go there. There are things like hiking paths, rock climbing, great scenery, and a path to drive on to take in the whole canyon. I do suggest getting out of the car though. I also recommend going in early morning if you are going in summer or spring. It can get HOT! This is a great place for pictures so bring your camera!
NOTE:Things to bring are your camera, walking shoes(not your favorite pair of shoes though, they will get red dirt on them), sunblock(if you go in summer), sunglasses, and something to drink(I suggest water).
This is a great place to go to see the nature side of Nevada. We even saw a huge raven and a lizard! My kids were so excited :). I would also suggest going to the bathroom before coming there because the restrooms when you are driving on the paths are GROSS. The gift shop also has bathrooms which are way nicer than the ones on the driving path. The gift shop also has some cool souvenirs so make sure you bring some extra cash! Red Rock Canyon is definitely a place to go :]

Best Shorter Day Trip: Red Rock Canyon

Best Shorter Day Trip: Red Rock Canyon

If you want to get out of Vegas, but you don’t want to spend a whole day in the car, there’s an excellent experience to be had just 25 minutes outside of the city in Red Rock Canyon. Not only is there a landscaping wonder to behold there, you can also pay a visit to Red Rock Resort and Casino – just in case you hadn’t gambled enough and just wanted a change of scenery. I find the resort to be a great place to grab a bite to eat after a morning of hiking.

By Vegas standards, Red Rock Canyon is a cheap thrill – only $5 gets a car through the gate for the entire day. Once inside, there’s a 13-mile, one-way loop that starts with the Visitor’s Center. And make sure to stop at the Visitor’s Center, because that will be your last opportunity to get beverages for your hiking endeavors, and also to use a restroom that is not an outhouse with a stool. So make good use of it!

Mostly because we weren’t smart enough to get our beverages in advance, we drove the entire loop one time first (to go back to the Visitor’s Center for water) and then went around again, using the newsletter we were given when we bought our ticket to decide what we wanted to see.

Along the loop there are several “stops” where you can park the car, get out, take some amazing pictures and even do some hiking. There are trails for both the faint of heart and the fanatics. I highly recommend stopping at the first trail at the Calico Hills. Once you see the rocks here, you’ll know where the name came from. The red rocks are huge, and lots of fun to climb on – both with your feet and with climbing equipment, if you’re so inclined.

My second favorite stop in the park is about 6 miles in, and it’s the highest point on the loop, offering fabulous views of the rocks – they look like someone took a paintbrush and made a mistake with the stroke of a hand.

Hiking in Red Rock Canyon is a lifetime experience. Minutes from Las Vegas, it's a totally different world. The entrance fee is only 5 bucks, or free if you have a national parks pass. Just inside the park is a visitor center and gift shop. There is a 13-mile scenic loop drive, with 19 different hiking trails you may turn off at along the way. Each of these hikes are rated from strenuous to easy. We went during late October and the weather was perfect, around 80 degrees with plenty of sunshine. It is important to bring water with you because it is so dry. It is said to be wild burros roaming about the park, but I've yet to see one. There are pictographs made by early native Americans that have once inhabited this area. We saw pictographs off of the Willow Springs picnic area. It was a minute walk from the car. The views are spectacular. If you're into photography, it's best to go early or around dusk, and you will have no problem finding subjects. Everywhere you turn are photo opportunities. Besides hiking, there is rock climbing and picnicking. I enjoyed just watching the rock climbers. Good walking shoes, water, and sunscreen are highly recommended. The trails are very rocky and rugged, even the easy trails, due to loose gravel. I highly suggest this park for a family vacation. If you're in Vegas, stop by Red Rock for a wonderful day or a few hours. It is a refreshing change from the whole dark, smoky casino scene.

Red Rock Canyon

Take a 20-minute drive away from the Strip to experience a whole different side of Nevada—beautiful Red Rock Canyon. For a small fee to enter the park, you then take the scenic drive where you have lots of options to stop and take in the awesome views and start on various hiking trails if you wish. Don't leave Nevada without seeing what nature has to offer.

Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon is about 15 miles out of Las Vegas, and it's worth a visit. In fact, it's so close to Vegas that you can see the red rocks from all over the city.

The canyon is made up of 197,000 acres within the Mojave Desert. Red Rock is an area of worldwide geologic interest and beauty. When arriving at the park, first stop at the spacious vistors center. The facility offers information about available recreation, wildlife, wild horses and burros, vegetation, geology, and cultural history. There is also a gift shop inside the vistors center if you're looking for some maps or souvenirs. The best part of vistor's center, however, is the Desert Tortoise, Mojave Max, who has taken up residence there.

Overall, there are a lot of things to do in Red Rock Canyon. If you like to hike, take spectacular pictures, or experience the desert, then plan on spending at least a couple of hours here. Red Rock Canyon also offers horseback riding at Bonnie Springs Ranch, picnicking at places like Willow Springs, and rock climbing.

My husband and I went to the canyon for scenic drive and to just take it all in. The Scenic Drive is a 13-mile, one-way loop that offers numerous stops for sightseeing and photography. Hiking trails are accessible from the designated pullouts and parking areas. The scenic drive is open daily from 6am until dusk.

We went to the canyon in November, and the weather was prefect. We were able to hike around without getting hot or dehydrated. I've read that the spring is especially beautiful in the canyon because of the wild flowers, but be prepared if you go to the canyon in the summer, because there isn't any shade or anywhere to cool off.
