It is not the ordinary market but a wonderful and unique market. It is best to visit Queen Victoria Market in the mornings. Wow! The first time I came here, I was delighted with the wonderful smells of fresh fruits and vegetables. In the morning, you will find more varieties of produce and they will be at their freshest. And experience the buskers and singing stall holders selling their fruits and vegetables.

In the covered deli section, which is an old building with its original stalls, you can buy and try its famous spicy sausage dripping in mustard and sauerkraut at one of the many stalls there! Mouth watering!

And in another section of this huge market, you can choose from a variety of Aussie souvenirs ranging from kangaroo and koala keychains to the famous boomerangs. Prices are moderate and you can bargain for them.

I love the stall in the middle of this section which sells paintings. Wo la la! Moderate prices but excellent masterpieces. Prices start from AUD 5 for a small painting.

And my little niece loves the performers outside the market space. She loves the little 'tumberlina girl'.

The Queen Victoria Market is opened from 6am till late afternoons except on Sunday, it starts at 9am.

And if you're interested in the history of the market, you can take a guided tour of this famous market. I have not tried any, so I can't give any comments. I guess it is worth trying for this tour by calling 9320582.

It is indeed a market place to inspire you to create a culinary masterpiece with its great atmosphere.

Whether you want gourmet cheeses and meats, fresh fruit and vegetables, clothes or fish the "Vic Market" has it all. Covering two city blocks its plethora of market stalls are under cover making it a good place to wander and look even if it is raining. The gourmet food shops with cheeses, meats, bread, olives etc. and the fresh meat stall some with huge fish on display are both inside buildings more than 100 years old. Around the edges are trendy cafes and coffee shops. Behind is the fresh fruit and vegetables, some of the freshest in Melbourne. There is even a separate section for organic produce. In another large area, under a large roofed area are a mass of stalls selling goods such as shoes, jeans, hats, fashion clothing, fabric and lots of souvenir stalls. You will find proces here much cheaper than in the shops, about 60%. You can even try bargaining if you dare. In the surrounding alleyways are a number of factory outlets which also sell cheap goods, particularly clothing. Catch any tram going up Elizabeth St. (from outside Flinders Street Station) and you will end up there. If you catch the City Circle Tram, it is only a couple of blocks to walk.

Through out Melbourne you can find markets, most being outdoor. The range of goods found in the markets is crafts, souveniors, daily goods, meats, breads, fish, baked goods and fruits and veggies. The Giant of all the markets is the'QUEEN VICTORIA MARKET' found in the central business district of the city. Enjoy all the color and excitement of this one of a kind market. Vic Market is more then just a shopping mecca, it is a historic landmark and an institution to Melbournians. This market spreads itself over 7 hectacres, meeting the needs of over 130,000 shoppers a week.

It is very easy to find your way to the market: catch any tram heading north on Elizabeth street, by car parking is only $1 for the first 2 hours, or you can take a train into the city and transfer to a tram.

Hours of trade: 6am-2pm Tues, Wed, Thurs
6am-6pm Fri
6am-3pm Sat
9am-4pm Sun
Closed Mon

This market is a place where you can find great value for your money. This is where I would recommend buying any 'Aussie' souvenirs... not in the souvenir stores in the city.
