Ptichii Rynok (The Bird Market)

Description

Here you will find much greater variety of animals, cages, and pet-food for sale than anywhere else in Moscow. The place is extremely crowded at the weekend, so you'd better not take children with you. Kittens and puppies of no particular breed are offered for free to passers-by at the entrance of the market. The various kinds of aquarium fish are very inexpensive, and water turtles cost from 60R to 200R ($3-8). Pigeons of various breeds cost 50R to 300R ($2-11), and a singing canary will set you back 600 to 800 rubles (USD 25-35).

There are a lot of rodents. A chinchilla costs 4000R ($150), while rats or mice are traded for only 10R ($0.4). Some pedigree puppies are expensive: Dalmatians – 6750R ($250), Mastino – 16200-16500R ($600-700), and small terriers – 2750R ($100). Traditional Russian sheep-dogs are priced from 1000R ($40).

If you decide to buy a puppy at the Bird Market, it is advisable to take a phone number from the seller (usually he or she is the owner of the dog). They will advise you on feeding and taking care of your puppy.
