Beach Life & Sun Bunnies

The beaches are endless in Puerto Vallarta! I am biased towards two of them, however, because of their beauty and the memories that they hold for me. La PLaya de Mismaloya is in the town of Mismaloya which is about a 20 minute bus ride ( a few minutes faster by cab)from the center of Vallarta. After walking along a muddy trail you emerge out into the open of sand and surf. Because of a hotel that sits right there on the beach and its proximity to other hotels in the area, the vendors can be a bit annoying. If laying out, you will no doubt be approached every five minutes by a women offering to braid your hair , give you a temporary tattoo, or by men selling beach umbrellas, clothing and jewelry. A polite "no, gracias" will be sufficient, unless you can't help but add a new piece of beaded jewelry to your collection. I actually had two bracelets made for me by a very interesting older woman. She just plopped down there right on the sand and in 10 minutes I had two beautiful, hand made beaded bracelets. Both for only 50 pesos!

While at La Playa de Mismaloya, the more adventurous can parasail or rent jetskis. We did the latter and since it was a slow day, the people let us go over our 30 minute time limit and didn't wave us in until 45 minutes later. They even haggled the price with us. It cost only 350 pesos and a bucket of Sol beer for us to ride. There is also a great view of Los Arcos, a series of rocks that jut from the water and which is a great place for snorkeling. The waves do not pose a problem to swimmers and in my experiences the water has been quite warm. The restaurant located at the beach is set underneath a grass-like hut and the food and service are definitely first class!

The other beach I feel at home at is La Playa de Los Muertos. Located near the Olas Altas part of town, I have found this beach more for laying out or relaxing underneath your own little "tiki hut" which are stationed up and down the beach. From there you can be waited on by staff from the many beach restaurants or you can enjoy an awesome foot massage, courtesy of Angel. In fact, Angel pretty much put me to sleep last time I was there! Thank you again, mi amigo! The waves here are a bit overpowering, though, and so I steered clear of the water. All in all, a wonderful experience and an opportunity to talk to tourists from around the world!
