California Sea Lions

Personally, I have seen enough sea lions for a lifetime, but my friend Tanya absolutely loved watching them. You can pass them when taking the Blue & Gold Fleet tour, but behind Pier 39 there are benches and crowds of people usually watching them also. Sometimes they are a bit funny to watch as they fight and play with each other, but mostly I fight them to pose or sleep. It costs nothing to watch the sea lions or take photos.

Go see the Sea Lions at Pier 39

We didn't spend a lot of time at Pier 39, but we did take the time to see the sea lions who now call Pier 39 their home. It is very entertaining to watch them and see them interacting among themselves, and it’s fun to call friends and family on your cell phone and let them listen to the sea lions in the background. They do smell somewhat. The pier has several tourist shops, camera shops, T-shirt shops...they were fun to walk through, but we thought there were more interesting things to see, and didn't spend a lot of time in this area. Children would most likely enjoy time on the pier, riding the carousel, etc. It is also convenient to book other tours from the pier, such as bicycle rides to the Golden Gate Bridge, cable car tours, and trips to Alcatraz.

It is great, they have everything there. There are free shows and even the seals on the docks taking in the sun. You can spend a week here and still want more.

Bay Cruise

San Francisco is built around the Bay, and with the Golden Gate Bridge one of the main tourist attractions, sailing around the Bay is a good way to familiarize yourself with the city as well as see the sights. In theory. We bought this ticket as part of our CityPass, and having failed to get tickets to Alcatraz, decided to go on the cruise instead. My tip is to make sure you go on a clear day.

The cruise was nice to start off with. We left from Fisherman's Wharf, getting a good look at the sea lions on the way. We then sailed along Golden Gate Park, with the audio commentary explaining what we were seeing. The closer to the bridge we got, the mistier it got, and the weather turned absolutely freezing. The automated guide continued, telling us what we were seeing now--except we couldn't see a thing, even when we were right under the bridge. It turned into a bit of a comedy at that point. It was quite cool in a spooky way, as the mist was so thick and everything was so still. It was good to get back towards Fisherman's Wharf, though, and warm up again.

Pier 39

Pier 39 is an easy two block walk east of Fisherman's Wharf at waters edge in San Francisco. It is a two level pier that is lined with 110 specialty shops, 11 dining restaurants, and street performers. There is a beautiful Venetian Carousel for the kids to enjoy while the adults rest their feet.

It is considered to be one of San Francisco's best attractions. It is a year round marketplace that has a noted festival party atmosphere. The shops are unique, you can spend a lot or nothing at all and still have a great time.

The views of the bay and back towards Fisherman's Wharf are magnificent. My personal favorite thing to do at Pier 39 is to watch the California sea lions where they have taken up permanent residence for the past 13 years at an area called K-Dock. You can watch their antics on the buoys and hear their barks to everyone's enjoyment. There are always a sizable number of them waiting to "perform" in their natural habitat for you.

Garage parking for Pier 39 is directly across the street from the plaza entrance and validation with a purchase at Pier 39 is available.
