Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona

Another one of those piazzas where people "hang out", it the home of Tre Scalini and its "tartufo" chocolate ice cream balls and Bernini's Fountain of the 4 Rivers. More people are drinking coffee and people watching than looking at the fountain. Still, if you want to study the fountain, notice that one of the river gods is supposedly recoiling in horror at the facade of the adjacent Church of St Agnese (designed by Bernini's rival Borromini). Must be an urban myth since the church was built after the fountain! What is known is that Bernini hated what we consider a masterpiece, exclaiming "I am ashamed to have done so poorly." there's an interesting toy store at the north end of the Piazza (Al Sogno) - high-end Italian toys and lots of Pinocchios. In the warmer months, this place transforms at night into a place to see and be seen. Watch out for pickpockets then.

Piazza Navona

Back in the Roman Empire Piazza Navona was the site of brutal games and circus entertainments, an outdoor companion to the Colosseo. Today it mainly serves as a quiet rest stop, where you can sip a drink at one of the many cafes that line the circular piazza and watch the crowds walk by. The fountain in the middle of the plaza seems to be popular with American tourists, who otherwise are trying to figure out what is the point of this large open space. At night, many locals seem to enjoy walking the loop of the Piazza Navona, passing by our table and smiling each time. I'd probably smile quite easily too if I could call this lovely area my home.

LA SELLA, & Piazza Navona

Walking into Piazza Navona with the narrow streets is always very breathtaking. The center has Bernini's spectacular fountain of the rivers, the Ganges, Danube, Plate and the Nile. Through out the Piazza there are musicians, artists and the locals and visitors come to the bars for hours. They are expensive but a great place for people watching. While we were in Rome we were told we must not go home until we did shopping. So we asked our friend where we should go and she said, you have to go to La Sella for Leather Products, so we did. Now one thing you will get used to if you do the walking thing is that no streets go in nice blocks. You find triangles, squares and rectangles, so it is real easy to get lost. But this one is easy to find once you have been there. First off you begin at Piazza Navova off Via Dei Coronari walk down through the Piazza at the end you will find Via Della Cuccagna and lo and behold there it is! The items in the store range from little leather pill boxes to coin purses, head bands to purses, flask to saddles. Most things are made by the owner, who was very helpful in helping us spend our money. But we had a nice time shopping in his store. The prices are very good. Look at the photo to see just a few things he has in the store. Also I included a picture of Piazza Navona on our way down to La Sella. While in the Piazza you can shop the many painters, but be careful some are not so real. But enjoy the whole experience.
