Phillip Island Tour

Beaches at Philip Island are really one of the best in Melbourne. The Penguin Parade itself can be a bit of a let down. It’s quite cold there at night so make sure you wrap up really well. While we all have images of hoards of penguins coming out of the sea and walking up the beach in groups they do not... they come up in ones, twos or threes so it does take quite awhile for it to happen! It is worth a visit because it’s a big tourist attraction in Melbourne and something you won’t get to see at home. However, be aware of the cold and the time it takes for them to come ashore.

The Penguin Parade is a definite must-see in the Melbourne area. Each night the fairy penguins (small penguins) waddle in from the sea to burrow in the sand dunes for the night. You'll see literally hundreds of penguins waddle up the beach past you into the dunes. It's quite a site. It's also quite loud as they make loud crying noises when a penguin goes into their neighbor's burrow by accident!

The Fairy Penguins

The Fairy Penguins

You must go see the Fairy Penguins on Phillip Island. They are the smallest penguins in the world and are the most adorable things!!

They come up at night to sleep and waddle onto the beach and then up to their burrows. At only a foot tall, they are endangered because of predators from the sea and human garbage. They are protected and live within a national park. Signs everywhere warn not to take pictures, touch the penguins or leave garbage. I was so impressed that all that was needed were these signs. There are no fences, trash, or anyone snapping away with their flash bulbs. People followed the rules and politely obeyed. How unlike some of the North American ways. It was such a thrill to stand about 6 inches away from these little critters, walk beside them for a bit and not have a fence in the way or someone misbehave and ruin the experience.

You can buy photographs in the gift shop at very reasonable prices as souveniers. All the proceeeds go to the continuation of the park.

We took an afternoon/evening bus tour to Phillip Island. En route, we stopped to spend time with kangaroos. They ate out of our hands and seemed to love the attention. Next we stopped at the Koala Conservation Centre on Phillip Island for close-up views of koalas at dusk. Then it was off to the "Penguin Parade", a steady stream of "fairy" penguins coming in to nest after a day out swimming/fishing. These are the smallest known penguins, just 13" tall. They are actually "ink blue", not black. It was truly a site to see (& hear!). I somehow managed to lose my warmest hat off the side of the railings. I'm comforted to think somewhere off Phillip Island, a little penguin has made a nice, warm nest out of one soft, fleecy, green hat!

Cowes is located 142km from Melbourne. Phillip Island is an oasis of nature and tranquility. The Island is surrounded with stunning beaches, diverse wildlife and lots of things to do. Marvel at the Fairy (Little) Penguins during their nightly parade. Take a historic walk. Maybe try yourself with some surfing. Or perhaps visit in October when the Motorcycle Grand Prix takes hold of the island. Seal Rocks is also located on this island (not worth the time since you cannot see them with your own eyes). One of Victorias Greatest wineries 'Phillip Island Winery' can be found here. Don't miss the 'Wildlife Wonderland' on your journey to the island... here you can have close encounters with some of the animals of Victoria.
