Philadelphia Zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo was America's first zoo. It opened in 1874.It is a fairly large facility, with a good offering of animals. There has been continuing reconstruction done in recent years to house the animals in a more natural environment. Much work has been done after the fire a few years ago. The Primate Reserve opened in 1999. It is in a nicely shaded area and usually keeps the hottest days tolerable. A treat for kids of all ages!

The Zoo is hopping with excitement.

There are several special exhibits this summer. Naga, the largest Komodo dragon in North America, is visiting from the Cincinnati Zoo. He is a monstrous 9½ feet long and weighs more than 200 pounds!

The Wallaby Walkabout features nearly twenty wallabies in a barrier-free habitat where guests can mingle side-by-side with these playful marsupials.

We were able to see all the animals and exhibits in 4 hours. We did not have children with us, so I'd allow more time if visiting the zoo with children.

America's First Zoo was opened to the public on July 1, 1874. This has been a favorite attraction in Philadelphia ever since. The animals are at home in their specially designed habitats. Everyone was wonderful about answering any questions that arose throughout your visit. The focus of the zoo is to conserve and protect animals that are threathened in their natural enviroment. Their exhibits really made you stop and think about man's impact on these wonderful creatures. Be sure to set aside a day to spend here and you will be very pleased you did.
