Lima-A Great Place To Kiss!

We’ve stopped at El Parque del Amor in Lima’s upscale Miraflores District. As we enter the park under the arch, I gasp at the larger-than-life sandstone sculpture just ahead of us. It’s of a man and a woman, locked in each other’s arms. As we walk closer, I read the plaque below and find it is called "El Beso" (The Kiss)—sculpted by renowned Peruvian artist, Victor Delfin, and unveiled during the park’s opening—and the date?—February 14, 1993—Valentine’s Day!
My husband and I walk back to the entrance and turn to take another look at this monument to love, framed by spectacular views of the blue Pacific behind wavy mosaic-tiled walls. Our guide tells us a few tales about the park—for example, there’s a kissing contest held here on weekends and the couple who holds the identical pose the longest, wins a dinner for two at La Rosa Nautica, an upscale restaurant below the bluff we’re standing on. My spouse is game to try but, not wanting to put my affection on a pedestal, I decline—opting for a quick peck instead!
We dismiss our tour guide… We’ll find our own way back to the hotel, and besides—three’s a crowd! There’s something about being in this "Park of Love" that promotes handholding and smooches. Wandering over to the walls, we realize the mosaic tiles contain romantic quotes from various poets and chuckle at the one that says "in the cities they do not build monuments to lovers." I guess no one told the Peruvians in Lima! Nearby two skydivers jump off the bluff, caught up in the breeze and the moment. How about that for romance—tandem skydiving? We decide to keep a bit more grounded and head to ‘Larcomar’ for coffee and shopping.
…And ‘Larcomar’...that’s another love story! This unique shopping mall is literally imbedded into the sandstone cliff facing the ocean, and allows an all-encompassing panorama of the Pacific. In this safe setting, we browse, buy, and thoroughly enjoy all that Larcomar offers—especially the close proximity to the crashing waves on the shoreline. After another shared latte, we stroll back to El Parque del Amor to catch the magnificent sunset, then a taxi. Another "love"ly day in Lima.
