Description

The impressive regional 'Gessi park' is situated between two streams; the Idice and the Savena. It has the Calaques of Abbadessa alongside it. At one time, this area was one of the city's quarries where they extracted chalk and selenite. These are known as lunar rocks because of their shine. Selenite was one of the most commonly used building materials in Bolognese architecture.

In 1871, they began to make some archeological digs which uncovered hundreds of caves, including Farneto, which has since been declared a national monument.

The Archeological museum is near the park and it has displays of items which date from the Paleolithic to the Villanovian era. If you are particularly interested in natural history, archeology or spelaelogy then you should take one of the tours organised by the park and the Calanques of Abbadessa.
