Description
The park in Val Troncea is spread over roughly 3300 hectares in the heart of the Cozie Alps at a height between 1670 and 3280 metres. The vegetation is mostly larch woods which turn a wonderful gold in autumn.
The woods are smaller than they used to be. Many trees were cut down to build the Fenestrelle fort and to supply the needs of the nearby Bet copper mines. The mines flourished until 1904 when an avalanche killed a large number of workers walking along the bottom of the valley.
The chamoix is the most typical animal but you may also see ibex, roe deer, red deer, golden eagles, sparrowhawk and the rare, large-headed owl.
