Wonderful Day on the Water

In December, 2008, we took a sailing trip to Molokini with Paragon Sailing Charters. We were lucky the day we went, the weather was great and the crater was smooth & calm! We went out on a "snorkel" tour with Paragon, where the crew took a group of us to point out some of the unique sealife at Molokini. From our first contact with Paragon (online, we saved quite a bit of money!) to our final aloha at the dock, the entire experience was a wonderful Maui dream.

A cool thing about our visit with Paragon is that we were able to sail to Molokini, snorkel a little, go back on the boat to enjoy our buffet lunch, then snorkel more. We noticed how once we got to Molokini, other boats started to leave. Too bad for them! We were there with one other boat, the crater was like it was ours alone.

The people at Paragon have the best jobs in the world. Captain Greg (who was our captain) says people say that to him all the time! He let my husband steer the boat in the winds coming back to the harbor. We even were able to buy some sun shirts from their office after our tour! We got a discount on the clothes, too, so now we are in Paragon style!

The only bummer of the whole tour was that it was not long enough. We definitely recommend Paragon. They are some of the nicest people we met on the whole island of Maui.

Be Careful with the Food

The crew was very nice and Molokini is beautiful. With that said, I wouldn't recommend Paragon.

The food they served was several steps on the Sandwich Ladder of Evolution below Subway (thus residing in the "School Cafeteria/airplane meal" realm). But it was fine. I'm not picky, especially on vacation.

But one day later, time bombs went off in all our stomachs. Everyone who was on that boat (even a couple whom we met at the airport, but shared no other meals together) had awful vomiting and diarrhea. Some even contemplated going to the hospital because they couldn't keep simple water down.

Meanwhile, everyone who didn't go on Paragon was completely fine. I have family on Maui whom we ate every other meal with and none of them developed symptoms.

I don't know if it was the food prep, handling, or storage, but the symptoms lead me to believe it was food poisoning or Norovirus.

When we contacted Paragon's manager, Kim, she became very irritated and accusatory. She seemed more annoyed with having to deal with the health department than concerned that her passengers were ill. She showed a real lack of professionalism.

We all lost a full day of our Maui vacation. I wouldn't risk another vacation by going with Paragon again.

Paragon

After we decided to go snorkeling at Molokini, we had a multitude of options from which to choose. Did we want to go on a sailboat or a power boat? Did we want a BBQ lunch or a deli lunch? Did we want a large, medium, or small boat? This is where Maui Revealed really came in handy. They had reviewed a bunch of these snorkeling boats and provided a concise summary of the ones they liked the best. Based on their review, we decided to go on the Paragon, a medium-sized sailboat. It was a great decision!

The ride to and from Molokini was almost as enjoyable as the actual snorkeling. It was fun to watch the crew members sail -- you could tell they really enjoyed what they did. It was smooth sailing (no pun intended) from the island to Molokini. There is a trampoline at the front of the boat that you can sit on and get water splashing up at you -- which was nicer on the ride back than the ride there. There was a light continental breakfast available, as well as a deli lunch that you could eat either before or after you snorkeled.

On the way back, the crew was more than happy to assist us in spotting whales and other sea creatures that we otherwise would have missed. I was disappointed when we had to disembark. Definitely one of the highlights of the trips -- both the sailing and the snorkeling.

PARAGON SAILING

Leaving the dock at 7:30am, we had a light continental breakfast while going out to Molokini to snorkel. The crew was extremely accommodating and friendly. The ship's mates, Ryan and Holly, were from the Netherlands and Austria respectively. We had some very interesting conversations with the other passengers who came from all over the world. There are only 24 people on board so it was easy to meet people in a relaxed setting. This is the only snorkeling cruise that actually sails (because they love to).
