Panathenaic Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium

This fascinating stadium was built entirely of marble during the 4th century BC. It was then the site of the first Olympic games in 1896. Across the street is a large photo of the opening ceremonies in 1896.

Panathenaic Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium was the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Its name, Panathinaikon, stands for "All Athenians Stadium". It has been reconstructed in the place of the original stadium, unfortunately it's not going to be used for the games of 2004. What a pity! It's true, it would not be very comfortable for the 21st century behinds to sit on marble slabs, but it should be done for the sake of history!

This stadium is one of these places that just gives you a good feeling inside. You're welcome to run laps around it, or to take a look at marble slabs documenting all the modern Olympic Games. In front of the stadium there is a statue of the Discus Thrower (quite naked I might add, which made quite a few girls on my bus tour giggle).
