In an urban environment it is quite a culture shock to come upon abbey remains in a meadow beside the river - but this is what we have here. The Abbey was founded by monks from Fountains Abbey in the 12th century and was destroyed as part of Henry the Eightth's attack on the monasteries. The ruins are both impressive and instructive.
Then there is the museum. I find on checking for htis page that it was reopened after improvements last year and that means a trip there shortly - but it was always good. There are three main galleries:- Victorian Life, Children's and one about the Abbey itself. The Victorian street with its various shops has always been a major attraction to adults and children alike.
