Osaka Castle

In the center of Osaka lies a historical sight that, despite having been rebuilt much smaller than the original castle, still commands awe for the architectural ingenuity of the Japanese. Originally built in the late 1500s by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Osaka Castle became the icon and heart of Hideyoshi's empire.
Today though, the castle has been gutted and made into a museum, but the grounds surrounding it have remained the same, providing a wonderful locale for every yearly festival, including the cherry blossom viewing in the spring which I was able to attend. A nice thing to do is to go to the top of the castle and look out at all of Osaka, and see how beautifully the Japanese have merged the 'skyscrapers' of old with those of the new, showing their ability to retain their history while making it too.
