Description
A broad, double flight of steps to the left of the Albergo dei Poveri in Via Foria leads to the Botanical Garden created by Giuseppe Bonaparte, the king of Naples and brother of Napoleon, during the brief French domination at the start of the 19th century.
The scientific park has reconstructions of various environmental habitats and greenhouses in which different micro-climates are recreated.
The monumental, Neo-Classical glass-house is reached by taking the main avenue that runs perpendicular to Via Foria until you pass the Vaseria amphitheatre. Here the Botanic Institute displays interesting herbariums and a specialised library.
Today the Botanic Garden is annexed to the university Faculty of Science and visits are allowed on request.
