This fort was begun by the French in 1726, and includes the only French fortified castle in the United States. This fort was not only occupied by the French, but also the British and finally the Americans. Its key position at the mouth of the Niagara River on Lake Ontario made it valuable to those who wanted to control the trade routes to the Great Lakes. The forts original stone buildings were built before the American Revolution. It has been restored and furnished to re-create the 18th century atmosphere. Re-enactments are held throughout the year. Drills and ceremonies are presented July through Labor Day. Special programs are offered. Historic Hauntings is a candlelight tour offered near Halloween complete with hair raising tales and cemetery tours. Also enjoyable is the murder mystery dinner theatre offered at the fort.
