Sedona & Oak Creek Canyon

The red rocks of Sedona are another of Arizona's natural beauties and a sight to behold. Sedona is a tourist mecca, full of T-shirt shops and unique storefronts that sell a little bit of everything. There is beautiful Southwestern art, figurines, etc. We took a jeep tour through the red rocks in Coconino National Forest and it was thrilling. The drivers are entertaining, chock-full of information about the natural flora and fauna, and experts at navigating the jeeps over the red rocks. The tour company we used was Day in the West and it included a jeep tour over the red rocks, an hour of horseback riding, and an old-fashioned Cowboy Dinner at the ranch...the steaks were DELICIOUS! There are many other tour companies that operate out of Sedona.

Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon

The drive through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona, south of Flagstaff, was pretty, but there were few places to pull off the road to take pictures, and special parking permits were required. The view of the red rock formations around Sedona was pretty, but it was extremely dry and hot the day we were there. It was nice to see, but not one of the more exciting parts of our trip.

This is a smaller canyon, but there is still a little hiking. It has interesting sites. Like the others in the area, it has its own special nature. The kids enjoyed it.

Oak Creek Canyon is a beautiful canyon, containing many pine trees. We approached Oak Creek Canyon from Flagstaff, where we stayed the previous night. From I-40, we headed south on US 89A. As you drive towards Sedona, you will see signs for the Oak Creek Canyon overlook. This point is great for taking pictures of the canyon. Also, Native American vendors sell their crafts at the site.

After our stop at the overlook, we continued south on 89A, through Oak Creek Canyon. It was one of the many windy roads we traveled on in Arizona. From here we continued south to Slide Rock State Park.
