Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery

One of the most famous wineries here is the Niebaum-Coppola Winery. Known as Rubicon Estate, this property is owned by the Coppola family. Francis Ford Coppola set out to reconstruct this estate in 1975 and has succeeded. The fountains out front, as well as the grand staircase at the entrance, are worth seeing. You can also see the Oscar that he won for The Godfather on display in the museum, which is free to all visitors. They also have a great gift shop and tasting room.

Niebaum-Coppola was the second winery we visited. It offers a tour (costing about $25), but we opted not to take it. Nevertheless, you can enjoy most of the fantastic facilities, minus a tour of the cellars and through the vineyards, on your own at no charge.

The winery is a beautiful castle-like structure that was purchased by Francis Ford Coppola, along, of course, with the vineyards. Unique to NC is the movie memorabilia, including props from The Godfather, Dracula, and Tucker, and artifacts from early movie-making. Coppola's Oscars are also on display, as well as items relating to the history of the winery before it belonged to Coppola. There is an opportunity to sample (for a charge) the products of Coppola's vineyards and plenty of outdoor seating.

2006 Update: Niebaum-Coppola Winery has now moved north to Geyserville (in Alexander Valley). In the former Coppola winery spot now stands Rubicon Winery, which is Francis Ford Coppola's "premium" label. As of the time of this writing it was $25 per person to park your car and get a special "passport" to tour the (formerly free) grounds and taste some wine. Locals get in free, but it's still a pricey proposition for a wine with a limited name and *no* movie memorabilia. All the "touristy" film stuff moved to Geyserville. This writer has not taken the opportunity to visit Rubicon, but will certainly update the journal when that happens. As it stands, the Niebaum-Coppola experience is still recommended and the review below still holds water, but be sure to add in an extra 30-45 minutes of roundtrip drive time from Rutherford if you want to visit the new winery location.

It's a bit of a tourist mill, but that's also why you go. Not only does Francis Ford Coppola's label boast some of the best table reds at a very reasonable price, but a tour of the winery itself is a must for any movie fan.

A handful of Oscars from the various Godfather movies are on display, as well as one of the cars from Tucker, the the desk from the Godfather(!!!), Kilgore's boots & hat from Apocalypse Now, the suit of armor from Dracula...and numerous other items of genuine movie memorabilia. There is also the most stunning stained glass over the staircase casting light into the main entryway.

The tasting room can get a bit crowded and has an overly-commercial feel to it, but premium tastings are available for the asking in a separate room. During the summer it can be a madhouse, so be prepared to walk a ways in as parking can be impossible when the crowds get big. Still worth the effort to see.

Yes, Coppola is Francis Ford Coppola of movie fame. You can't escape that here at the winery -- it includes a museum of movie props, including of course those from the Godfather movies.

The tasting room (more like an estate) has a touch of theme park about it. Wine World, perhaps. They charge $6-10 to taste, depending on what wines you are sampling, but the pours are generous, considering the purpose is supposed to be to decide what you'd like to buy, and you and a companion can always share one glass. And you get to keep the glass. My favorite was the Black Diamond Claret, which had a lot of fruit without being heavily oaked. It's about $15 at the winery (cheaper at Trader Joe's and Costco).

There is a huge gift shop with all kinds of wine-related paraphernalia and books. The grounds are stunning in a very Hollywood way -- I believe his daughter, actress Sofia Coppola, got married on the grounds. There is a picnic area with a good view of the valley.
