New Horizons II - A Great Day Sail

  • May 20, 2008

During our trip to St. Thomas we went on the Horizons II day sail. The crew was very friendly, upbeat, and showed us an amazing time! The first stop was at Virgin Gorda at The Baths. These are amazing rock structures that create the most beautiful shallow pools. Its quite the hike to get through them - but worth it! At the end of this stop is Devils Beach which has the most beautiful water I've ever seen. After a snorkeling stop outside of Marina Key we stopped on the tiny island for lunch at Pussers. Our third and final stop was at Jost Van Dyke - the cutest beach full of anchored boats and tiny bars. This is where the Painkiller (signature VI drink) originated at the Soggy Dollar Bar. They are amazing!!!! I would highly suggest this trip - it was definately the highlight of our trip!!

We just got back from a week in St. Thomas, and I would have to say that the day sailing trip we took with New Horizons was the highlight of our trip. It's the only way to truly experience the St. Thomas-St. John area. The trip started with a very brief shower but the sky soon was filled with a beautiful rainbow. The trip only got better from here with the crew of 1 captain and 2 mates pampering all aboard the entire trip. They really know how to show you a good time, with all the drinks and food you could ask for, not to mention the sailing in the tranquil Caribbean with 2 snorkel stops at a cove off St. Johns, and then one other near another island nearby. It was well worth the cost for 4 of us and if you book through one of the hotel specials, you should be able to find it for half price. This is truly a trip not to be missed! I just wish New Horizons updated their web site with pictures of recent crew and trips.

New Horizons

We went to Virgin Gorda as our first stop. Virgin Gorda is the home of The Baths, which are these enormous boulders (as big as a car) that create little caves and saunas in the ocean. On normal days, they take you snorkeling here through different caves, but the day we went, it was too rough, so we did the land tour. They served us breakfast before we got there.

We then stopped at this tiny little island call Marina Key; the island is so small that there is just a restaurant and a hotel. We had lunch here at Pusser's, which is famous for their rum. The food was delicious and very fresh. Pusser's sits right on the beach, of course, with crystal-clear water surrounding and little tiki huts on the beach. After lunch, we went to this huge reef that had colorful fish (parrot fish and all different kinds), coral, and huge purple sea fans. One of the fellow guests on our boat spotted nurse sharks, which are harmless.

The last stop was off to Jost Van Dyke (which is pronounced Yost); this was absolutely gorgeous water, the color of a pool, and gleaming white-sand beaches. We anchored and swam into the beach because they have no docks there. This leads to the main attraction, the Soggy Dollar Bar, where the Painkiller, a local drink, was invented. The Painkillers are delicious, and they even roast and grind fresh nutmeg and put it on top of the drink. The beaches are lined with hammocks; does it get better than this? I was speaking to the captain, and he hung out with Kate Moss (the model) the week before at the bar. There is another bar on Jost Van Dyke called Foxy's, which we didn't go to, and I read that appearances from the Beach Boys to Jimmy Buffet have stopped to play there. After we had to leave Jost Van Dyke (trust me, I didn't want to leave), we sailed back to St. Thomas and enjoyed the open bar on the boat and shrimp cocktail on the way back. The whole trip was well worth $115, and the Captain Dave and First Mate Lauren were a lot of fun and thought of every last detail, such as big ziplock baggies to put your cameras in when you swim up to Jost Van Dyke.

British Virgin Islands Tour

This was by far the best day of our St. Thomas vacation. It started about 8:30am. We boarded the boat, which held about 15 people, and were served a continental breakfast. We traveled for about an hour and stopped at Virgin Gorda to clear customs. We had filled out all of our information when we boarded, and one of our tour guides handled the paperwork once we reached Virgin Gorda. From there, we motored over to the Baths. This place is spectacular. It is made up of huge boulders/rock formations that flow from the land into the water. There is nothing quite like it, and words do not do it justice. One of our guides lead us on a guided tour of the area, and then we had free time to snorkel (gear included with tour). Back onboard our boat, we were served painkillers, or Cokes. Our next stop was at Marina Cay for lunch, then off to Guana Island for more snorkeling. Back on board, there were more painkillers! Then we made our last stop at Jost Van Dyke, where we visited the world-famous Soggy Dollar Bar. They are the inventors of the painkiller, so we had to have one. At the end of the day, we cruised back to St. Thomas while our guide gave us details of the islands we were passing on the way. We arrived back on St. Thomas about 5pm.

New Horizons Day Sail

This day sail is very relaxing and makes two stops for snorkeling. There is lots of shade or sun on the sloop. The ship tacks smoothly thru the Pillsbury Sound to Honeymoon Beach on the northwest corner of St. John Island, where you snokel around reefs just off the beach.

A buffet lunch is served on the afternoon sail to Grand St. James Island, where once again you can snorkel and see many beautiful fish. The buffet lunch is great and drinks are served by the crew all day. Makes for an outstanding day sail for the entire family. I would highly recommend this trip. Call 1-800-808-7604 to book ahead of time. It can also be booked on the Internet. The cost is $95/person.
