Natchez Paddleboat

It was fun traveling down the Mississippi on a steam-fired paddleboat. You felt like you were going back in time to the days of paddleboats on the Mississippi. The captain was very knowledgeable about the history and sites along the river, including the freighters, Cape Kennedy, and the tugboats.

Tina Turner's song "Rolling On the River" was probably written for the Natchez because it rolls along the waves of the Mississippi. I can't tell you how many times I felt like I was going up and down the waves when I was on land. The Natchez is an authentic steam sternwheeler with a steam calliope that plays music above, an engine room, and a gift shop with decks full of chairs. I have often come with my middle school during Christmas, where local schools perform and have a tour of the Mississippi. I was one of the schools, but I'm not sure if my high school does it. The first deck below is usually the wettest, since it's close to where the water is. A buffet is optional, which comes along with your ticket. The gift shop has books about New Orleans, T-shirts, postcards, and other souvenirs. The steamboat has daily jazz cruises from 11:30am and 2:30pm. When not in the Christmas season, the steamboat features Duke Heitger and the Steamboat Stompers. Dinner jazz crusies feature the Dukes of Dixieland Jazz Band. The best part of the ship is the second deck, looking at the front, feeling the boat glide across the muddy Mississippi.

I think it is great family fun at a reasonable price. But what the boat offered for both entertainment and food left a lot to be desired. I guess the band was supposed to be a jazz one, but they were missing a member, so the music sounded bare. And the food that was present appeared to be deep-fat fried (we didn't eat it). In spite of these things, we had a wonderful time. We relaxed and had a few mixed drinks as we enjoyed the scenery from the boat.

We took the nighttime dinner/jazz cruise aboard the Steamboat Natchez. I was somewhat disappointed with the entire experience.

The food was just so-so, very "cafeteria" in its taste. The band was acceptable, but with little/no dance area, patrons were reduced to simply listening. There were deck chairs outside, but the night we went it was far too chilly to stay outside any length of time. Perhaps the cruise would be more enjoyable in summer, when there is more light later in the evening, as is it was dark when we left the dock and you couldn't see anything. There was no narration or guide outside either, so you don't know what you are looking at.

The cost ($57 per adult) was too much for what we received also. I think you're better off skipping this attraction altogether, grabbing dinner at Old Nawlins Cookery (try the Creole mustard chicken), and going to Preservation Hall for jazz.

We thought it would be romantic and fun to take the Natchez Steamboat dinner cruise.

We arrived around 5:45pm and had our picture taken by the Natchez photographer. These photos are developed while you are on the two hour cruise and available for you to purchase as you leave the boat later.

The Natchez Crew was warm, friendly, and full of the southern hospitality. They start serving dinner at 6pm. Dinner consists of:

Sternwheeler Salad

Green Beans Almondine

Praline Chicken

Catfish Louisiane

Prime Rib

Mardi Gras Pasta Alfredo

Spinach Southern Style

Roasted Potatoes

French Bread and Butter

New Orleans Bread Pudding

Community coffee an ice tea are served at no additional charge with your meal. There is a bar on board and drinks are available for an additional charge.

The food was pretty good - but average as New Orleans meals go. The sunset was gorgeous and the music group Dukes of Dixeland give you a real feel for the crescent city. We found the trip enjoyable and would recommend the cruise highly - but suggest skipping the meal as there is no reason to eat a 'marginal' meal in New Orleans.
