After spending a few days doing things that weren't specifically kid friendly, we decided it would be a good time to have a whole kid day. Luckily for us we have a zoo membership at Milwaukee County Zoo and the Nashville zoo is on the reciprocal list - in other words, it was free!
The zoo is still very new - it's only been around about 10 years. Being that it is so new, all the exhibits really take in mind the amount of space the animals need and their habitat. The space for the elephants was enormous - we walked most of the way around it to find out that it was too cold that day for the giraffes to venture outside. We enjoyed how vocal the Siamang were during our visit as well. Because the exhibits are so large, be prepared to walk a lot between the exhibits. Our favorite exhibit was the one for the meerkats because you can peek up through a glass "hole" within the exhibit. Very cute.
There are a limited number of animals species since there is still a lot of building taking place. Our biggest complaint is that there are only bathrooms near the center of the zoo. They have not made any on the outskirts - this is not good for children! The snack choices were very limited as well - how can a zoo have no popcorn or cotton candy?
I think it will be a great zoo given a few more years of development as we saw the construction of another bathroom sight and food place. It's still a very nice zoo and habitat friendly. I never thought bathroom location would be a big deal, but with a toddler just entering the potty training stage...a portable bathroom or two would have been really appreciated!

My husband did the zoo thing with the kids while I shopped (he's a great guy!). He said the zoo was pretty good, organized well, and in the process of adding exibits and animals. The playground is huge and our little girls had the most wonderful time of all there. He did say the petting zoo was great, and the grounds were clean and attractive.

As far as comparing the zoo to the other zoos I have personally been to around the country, I would have to say it's just average. The two major things that stand out, or stood out, for me were the Bamboo Trail and the Grassmere Home. If you have children, I think that it’s definitely a must-stop on the vacation list. Also, if you are looking for a way to kill a few hours, it makes for a great walk. One thing I must say that I haven’t seen at other zoos was their bat exhibit. I’m not that into bats, but it was neat to see.

The Nashville Zoo was relocated to a historic property. Not only can you view the animals in spacious exhibits, but you can also explore colonial farmland and a home. Be sure to see the cheetah exhibit. As you walk down the hill, you cannot see the fence and it appears that the cheetahs are free roaming.

The locals go to see it, so it can't be bad. Grey Line Tours have an excursion here. Well worth a visit.
