Few cities in North America can boast as much history and elegance as the seaport of Charleston. The best way to see all this history in a short period of time is to take a one hour carriage tour. There are several carriage tour companies to choose from, and I'm sure all of them do a great job. The
Old South Carriage Company was the one we took, and we were impressed with the information they shared, not only about the highlights of the 300+ history of Charleston, but the architectural antebellum mansions and churches along their quaint cobblestone streets. Some of the places I remember of the tour is the Charleston's famous
Rainbow Row with pastel-colored facades on East Bay Street. The
Calhoun Mansion built in 1876. This 24,000 square foot Victorian Manor House, as well as its formal gardens, has been beautiful restored at 16 Meeting Street. The
Edmonston Alston House, built by Charles Edomston, a prosperous merchant and wharf owner, at 21 East Battery has a commanding view of the Charleston Harbor.
Prices are all about the same with a regular adult ticket price at $18 and $10 for children.
While in Charleston be sure to visit the many shops along Market Street.
