Australia Zoo

The zoo, although smaller than many U.S. zoos, gives you the opportunity to pet and feed kangaroos in a large, fenced-in area. You can also pat koalas under careful supervision. The wildlife shows take place in an open colliseum area called the Crocoseum. Steve Irwin is often there and does a crocodile show close to noon. The zoo is so supportive of wildlife that you do not mind spending money in the food courts and gift shop.

The best way to get here from Brisbane is to take the 'Crocodile Train' and then there is a free shuttle bus from Beerwah station to the zoo. Alternatively you can drive yourself, it's about 45 minutes north of Brisbane on the Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Route. There is lots to do here and everything is well laid out. There is also a large shop full of clothes, toys and other souvenirs. Part of the excitement comes from seeing Aussie native animals that you're not likely to see in the wild, such as dingos, Tasmanian Devils and wombats. The snake collection here is huge but a must see! Overall this is an essential part of a visit to Queensland and educational to all ages.
