Austin Duck Adventures

The tour is taken in a military amphibian vehicle, which drives into Lake Austin and cruises around before returning to the starting point. The tour gives you the highlights of the central part of Austin and the duck quackers they give everyone to use as you tour around are fun. Kids will also enjoy the drive into the water. The tour itself was okay, but the canopy over the open vehicle was quite low and your view was often restricted; if you were on a full tour, you couldn't move around at all to get a view of certain sights. I would suggest that other than for the novelty factor, I would take one of the other tours available from the same location.

Upon my arrival into Austin I thought this tour would offer me a great overview of the city and help me decide how I wanted to spend the rest of my trip. I scheduled a 2pm tour and then when I arrived at the tour departure sight, they told me that I was the only person booked on this tour and that I should try for another day. I then booked 11am the next day only to have the exact same thing happen to me. The Visitors Center allowed me to exchange my Duck Adventures ticket for a ticket on the Austin Overtures tour. If you decide to take the Duck Adventures tour, be sure to ask how many people they have booked for the tour or you could be wasting your time. My advice – skip the Duck tour and go right for the Austin Overtures tour.

Austin Duck Adventure

A funny thing happened to us on the way to our Duck Adventure. We missed the bus, or was it a boat!! As we drove up to the Visitor’s Center at 201 E. Second Street, where the Duck departs, we watched it drive away- our seats - well, they were empty. So, being the curious people that we are, we decided to follow the Duck to see what we had missed.

During 75 minute tour on this ambhibious vehicle, you will get a duck’s eye view of the State Capitol Building, the Governor’s Mansion, the Texas History Museum, historical Congress Avenue and, of course, 6th street. Leaving the downtown area, the Duck made its way to Lake Austin. As we approached the lake, we located the boat ramp so I thought this would be a great photo opportunity. I had to move fast because after just a quick pause at the top of the ramp- the Duck took off and SPLASH into the water. The passengers (us not being among them) enjoyed a 20 minutes cruise on the Lake before returning to the Visitors Center.

Although we weren’t on board, we did get to see almost all the sights they saw, except we didn’t get to experience the cruise. As the Duck splashed into the water, we could hear the passengers’ reaction- one of exhilaration. In following the Duck, we felt like Mel Gibson in one of his chase scenes, trying to keep up. It was great fun.

Tours schedule vary somewhat with the seasons, so it is best to call and verify the times. There is always a 2:00 tour daily. The Duck Adventure has a wonderful and fun website (almost as FUN as the actual tour). Check out www.austinducks.com

Only one piece of advice- DON’T MISS THE DUCK !
