The Musée Mécanique is a collection of old time antique penny arcade machines, games, fortune-telling machines, musical instruments and curiosities. Located in San Francisco on Pier 45 at the bottom of Taylor Street in Fisherman's Wharf. It's right next to the USS Pampanito submarine. The museum is one of the world's largest privately owned collections of mechanically operated machines (over 200). Collected over the years by
Edward Galland Zelinsky, whose family maintains the collection. Many of the machines are over 100 years old! There are pianos and instruments that play songs, figures that dance or move, 19th century "peep shows", fortune-telling machines, etc.
My favorite is the astonishing "Carnival", which is basically a giant miniature diorama of a fairground with ferris wheel, bandstand, merry-go-round, sideshows, and fair goers that lights up, moves, and plays music when you put in a quarter. There's a similar Farm diorama too. The museum also has some more recent vintage pinball and arcade games from the 80's. And most of these machines only costs a quarter to play. For those who collect elongated or smashed pennies, the museum boasts nearly a dozen of these machines with many designs for 50 cents each, plus the penny to squash. The museum itself is free to get in!
I highly recommend a visit if you're in the Bay area.
