I contacted www.canyonrides.com and booked a half-day North Rim mule ride. As it turned out, a half-day was plenty. It was not particulary strenuous, but at the end of the trip, you are pleasantly tired. We descended halfway into the Canyon, often seeming to teeter precariously on the edge of a trail that seemed awfully narrow from atop the sure-footed mule. The scenery was beautiful and the guides were excellent, informative and entertaining. Bring your camera and video camera, and a bandana to keep the dust out of your nose and mouth. You may look like a bandit, but you will be glad later when everybody else is still blowing out red dust the next day. You get a "Master muleteer" certificate at the end of your journey to go along with your sole backside - plan a long, hot bath at the end of the day.
Highly recommended - an experience that you will tell your grandkids about. Affordable, easy to make a reservation, and not too hard for kids or adventurous older travelers. Be warned, there is a 200 pound weight limit!
